Mixologist Ed’s Recipe – Classic Red Sangria
A bold, fruity, wine-forward drink with citrus, sweetness, and a spirited kick that will take you all the way to Spains Ibiza island
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Chill Time: 2–4 hours
Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
Servings: 6–8 glasses
Ingredients:
- 1 (750ml) bottle dry red wine (like Tempranillo, Garnacha, or Merlot)
- ¼ cup brandy
- ¼ cup orange liqueur (like Triple Sec or Cointreau)
- 2 tablespoons sugar or honey (adjust to taste)
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 1 lemon, thinly sliced
- 1 lime, thinly sliced
- 1 apple, cored and diced (leave skin on)
- ½ cup fresh berries (optional: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
- 1–2 cinnamon sticks (optional for depth)
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1 cup club soda or lemon-lime soda (add just before serving)
Instructions:
1. Combine the Base:
In a large pitcher, stir together red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, orange juice, and sugar or honey until the sweetener dissolves.
2. Add the Fruit:
Toss in sliced citrus, apple, and berries. Add cinnamon sticks if using. Stir gently to distribute the fruit.
3. Chill and Infuse:
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or ideally 4, so the flavors blend and the fruit infuses the drink.
4. Serve:
Just before serving, stir in chilled club soda or lemon-lime soda for sparkle. Serve over ice with spoonfuls of wine-soaked fruit in each glass.
Mixologist Ed’s Tips:
- For a sweeter sangria, use a sweet red wine or add more orange juice or soda.
- For a bolder kick, increase the brandy to ½ cup.
- For white sangria, swap red wine with a dry white like Sauvignon Blanc and replace orange liqueur with elderflower liqueur with a splash of Galiano.
Serving Suggestion:
Garnish glasses with citrus slices or fresh mint sprigs. Pair with tapas, BBQ, or spicy dishes.
Best to drink on a Saturday brunch outing while listening to Fat Boy Slim tracks
